Our Life In New York

Battery Park City

Until July 2002 we lived in an apartment on River Terrace in Battery Park City. We both had a five minute walk to get to work. There was a delightful small park on the Hudson just across the road from our building. Shops were a short walk away, we were expecting Riley, and we looked forward to a convenient life in New York. We had been there only a few months when the planes hit the World Trade Center - next door to the World Financial Center where we both worked. The paragraphs below the photographs was written shortly after and remains unaltered.

We enjoyed reasonable views of the Hudson River, but spectacular views of the World Trade Center Towers. The panoramas below were taken by Ann's father a few weeks before September 11th. Shortly afterwards he sold large prints of these photographs to raise money for one of the New York Ladder Stations who had last one of their members in the disaster.

The picture of us heading Northbound away from our apartment was taken on september 15th by an AP photographer (Charles Rex Arbogast) and published in a newspaper.

The overviews of Lower Manhattan were taken from various websites and annotated to show where we lived and worked.

September 11, 2001

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost friends, loved ones, and relatives in this horrendous tragedy. We would also like to recognize and praise the many who have risked their lives in the rescue effort, particularly the NYPD and FDNY.

Thank you to all of the friends and relatives who thought of us on September 11th. We work in different buildings in the World Financial Center. We were talking to each other on the phone when it occurred and both of us felt the impact. We saw debris falling outside the window and decided to leave immediately, meet outside, and return to our apartment.

From the apartment we saw the second plane hit, left the area immediately, and were nowhere near the WTC when it collapsed. The picture on the right shows us retrieving our belongings from the apartment on Saturday, four days after the crash. The satellite photo above shows the paths taken by the planes and how close we were.

For the first six weeks we stayed with friends. We returned to our apartment in early November. Our telephones are still not reconnected. The views we used to have are at shown above. If anyone wishes to reach us they should try our cell-phone numbers.

Again, thank you. We appreciate so many friends and relatives thinking of us, opening their homes to us, and taking the trouble to ask about us. It has meant a lot to us both.
